The EQUUS Foundation was established in August 2002 as an IRS tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) charity to raise public awareness of the value of horses in our everyday lives through education and grant awards.
We are dedicated to finding homes and useful lives for horses and serve horse charities by 1) Educating the public about horses; 2) Providing fundraising support through the award of grants; 3) Offering insight on the management and financial practices of these charities through a thorough review of their operations; and 4) Providing a network of interested individuals for volunteer recruitment.
Over $1.3 million in grants has been awarded to charities that promote horse welfare, advance the equestrian sport and use the horse to benefit the public, affecting the lives of thousands of horses and people across the United States.
Horse Welfare grants are awarded for horse rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, foster care, and retirement programs, equine ambulance services and veterinary education and research.
Grants are also awarded to advance the equestrian sport, including funding for scholarships, awards, land conservation, youth programs, public education programs and relief to equestrians suffering from life threatening illness, catastrophic accidents or injuries.
Grants are also awarded for therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities for individuals with physical, emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities, life-threatening or other serious illnesses, and economically under-served youth. By bonding with these gentle giants, people learn to take control of their lives and become more capable of facing life?s challenges.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Our volunteer opportunities are two-fold: 1) individuals may volunteer directly in support of The EQUUS Foundation to assist with a variety of tasks in all areas of our operations ? fundraising, grant review and administrative support, and 2) individuals may volunteer for our grant recipient charities listed on our website, equus@equusfoundation.org..
