Health Alert: Herpes Virus

Two horses at the Northville Downs racetrack in Michigan were euthanized in December because of neurological herpes. Quarantines were instituted, but a third case was euthanized mid January. It also spread to another barn on the grounds.

Sporadic outbreaks of neurological herpes occur every year, and it’s wise to be alert to areas where the virus is active. Vaccination won’t protect against neurological herpes, and some researchers believe frequent vaccination might increase the risk. Discuss the risks with your own veterinarian.
