The False Dandelion

The broadleaf plant Hypochaeris radicata?known as flatweed, cat?s ear or ?false dandelion??is found in most states. Ingesting it can cause stringhalt in horses, although horses usually avoid them unless grazing is sparse. Most horses recover with veterinary help, but it may take a year. A horse with stringhalt moves with an exaggerated flexion of the hock. The leg jerks high, even smacking the belly. When it goes back down, it pounds onto the ground.
