BOULDER, COLORADO—ADM Animal Nutrition and The Team Roping Journal partnered with World Champion Header Clay Smith for an exclusive Win-A-Day Clinic, in which one lucky winner receives a full-day roping clinic with Smith at an arena of his or her choosing.
Smith selected Oklahoma’s Bill Downing as the winner from a pool of more than 450 entries, which included essay and video components. The field was narrowed down to 10 finalists and ultimately, one winner. But given the time, effort and storytelling put into each entry, Smith wanted to help more than just one person.
“He got the list of finalists, looked at it and said ‘I want to do something for all these individuals. Yes, we have to pick one, and that person will get the one-on-one clinic, but of these 10 individuals, each one of them has a reason why I would like to work with them,’” Mike Barrett, Equine and Consumer Business Manager for ADM, explained. “So he came back to us and said he wanted to offer the other nine finalists an invitation to come to his ranch. He’d put together a day for everyone to come and work with him so he could give everyone some help with their roping.”
Smith has won the PRCA heading world title the last two years, and he will enter this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 3–Dec. 12, No. 2 in the world standings with $69,703.55 won on the year. He’s also fourth in the PRCA’s all-around cowboy race, with a shot at both gold buckles at this year’s NFR in Arlington, Texas.
“Clay’s on top of his game when it comes to being a header,” Barrett added. “He’s knocking on the door of a world title again this year. But he’s also someone who has a genuine heart and care for individuals and wants to see them succeed.”
Instructional videos and photos from the Win-A-Day with Downing and Smith will appear across The Team Roping Journal brand in 2021.
