September 16, 2010 — In celebration of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, The Sport Horse: What Makes an International Champion from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), produced by EQUUS Magazine, takes you inside each of the FEI sports for a look at equine athletes through the eyes of the veterinarians who care for them.
The Games, to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park September 25-October 10, will showcase horses and their human partners as they compete for the world championships in their respective disciplines. But it is also a tribute to unsung heroes–the veterinarians behind the scenes ministering to their countries’ equestrian teams in horse inspection stations and competition venues, maintaining the welfare of their equine charges.
The publication is printed as a special supplement within the October issue of EQUUS and is also being distributed by AAEP as a stand-alone piece at the Games.
Chartered in 1954, the AAEP was the vision of 11 veterinarians determined to focus their profession’s attention on the health and welfare of horses, ranging from backyard ponies to champions of the racetrack and show ring. AAEP membership has since grown to nearly 10,000 practitioners and students in 64 countries. Always at the forefront of equine sports medicine, the association, through the AAEP Foundation, supports research on critical equine health and lameness issues.
Launched in 1977, EQUUS became a valued bridge between veterinarians and horse owners. An instant success-and a perpetual winner of the highest industry awards–the magazine remains a horse world icon known for its thoughful articles and outstanding images that focus on understanding the horse and providing responsible care.
