October 16, 2013 — Top competitors will vie for a national title at the Kentucky Horse Park as they compete in the USEF National One-Star Eventing Championships. Held October 17-19 in conjunction with the Hagyard Midsouth Three-Day Event & Team Challenge, 42 horse-and-rider combinations will contest the CCI1* after all pairs passed the first horse inspection.
In the USEF National One-Star Championship, riders age 22 or over hope to be crowned champion and receive the Richard Collins Trophy. Leading the field of 23 combinations, Lisa Borgia (Maple Plain, Minn.) and Frodo of the Shire have found much success at the one-star level this year. In June, she and her own 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding won the CCI1* at the Fox River Valley Pony Club Horse Trials. Earlier this month, the pair won the CIC1* at Roebke’s Run Horse Trials as their final run before the championship.
A field of 19 riders between the ages of 14 and 21 will compete for the Harry T. Peters Trophy in the USEF National Junior and Young Rider One-Star Championship. Alexa Ehlers (Lexington, Ky.) and Clear Approval have already claimed a championship title this year, winning the USEA Area VIII Preliminary Championship back in August. She hopes to maintain their excellent form this weekend as the seven-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned by Hidden Glen Farm will contest his first CCI1*.
The competition will begin Thursday with dressage starting at 12:15 pm ET. Cross country will take place Friday beginning at 1:45 pm ET, and the competition will finish up Saturday with the show jumping at 11:30 am ET.
