March 10, 2006 — The U.S. Equestrian Federation announced March 6 that two horse-and-rider combinations have been named to the show jumping short list for this year’s World Equestrian Games (WEG), to be held in Aachen, Germany, August 20-September 3. They are as follows:
- McLain Ward of Brewster, N.Y., with Sapphire, an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Harrison’s Double H Farm
- Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, N.Y., with Authentic, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, owned by Abigail Wexner
Both Ward and Madden were members of the gold medal-winning 2004 Olympic Show Jumping Team. According to the selection criteria, the top six finishers from the selection trials, to be held March 21-25 in Wellington, Fla., will be placed on the short list along with four subjective horse-and-rider combinations which can be named prior to or after the trials.
The final team of four riders and one alternate for WEG will be selected from the short list and will be announced no later than August 22.
