Olympic Ab Fab Special: Comic Gold

24 July 2012

Just in case you’re starting to take the opening of the London 2012 Olympics this weekend seriously, consider this: the first people allowed onto the track in the new Olympic Stadium were Patsy and Eddy, stars of the BBC hit comedy, Ab Fab. To celebrate the launch of the Games, BBC America will air the long-awaited Ab Fab Olympic Special on Wednesday night, July 25, at 9 p.m. ET. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UubGBbpvjF0 Yes, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are back, just in time for the Olympics! You never dreamed they’d give up their Ferragamos for Nikes, but you are in for a surprise! It’s the ?third of the three all-new?Absolutely Fabulous?20th Anniversary Specials–and also the end of the show. All fingers were crossed that the script would have an equestrian Olympics theme, but Saunders–who recently was seen shooting a documentary on horses and serves as an ambassador for British Showjumping–went for The Big Stadium. Here’s a brief synopsis of what goes on: Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) are well known for having their fingers on the pulse of the nation. But as the sound of the approaching Olympiad reaches deafening proportions, Eddy is surprised that it is all about to start; she thought it was just a lot of talk. London actually went through with it? The problem: Eddy has rented out her house to a Hollywood A-lister, but she’s still living in it, as is her daughter (Julia Sawalha), her mother (June Whitfield) and her assistant Bubble (Jane Horrocks). Patsy tries to get into Eddy?s body-suit to look suitably great for the A-listers, with disastrous results. Let’s just say that health professionals are summoned. Meanwhile, Eddy feels that doors are closing on her, that age is catching up with her, that invitations are not coming her way anymore and that Stella McCartney?s shop is closed to her. Things can only get worse? Somehow before the Olympic flame has been lit (after it is used to light Patsy’s cigarette), the two of them will end up running for glory inside the Olympic stadium and crash a reception for the likes of famed Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey Thompsons, Athens Gold Medalist Dame Kelly Holmes, and fashion designer Stella McCartney herself. The special is a Saunders and French production for BBC, co-produced by BBC AMERICA. It is written by Jennifer Saunders and executive produced by Jon Plowman (Twenty Twelve,?Extras).

The Ab Fab stars and crew were the first people allowed into the Olympic Stadium, where the grand finale scene was shot. And it is grand! This is Ab Fab’s last show. Ever.
