After paying the entrance fee and passing through the Mews Gift Shop, the visitor enters the Mews through the Riding School.
Built in 1765, the Riding School was designed by Sir William Chambers. The long, well-lit riding arena is where the young Mews horses receive their initial training.
Civil servants working in the surrounding government offices have the unique opportunity to take riding lessons in the riding school, on horses also housed in the Mews. A hoofpick hangs on a string just outside the arena so that sand can be removed from horse’s hooves before the horse is led out through the quadrangle to the stables.
